Dr Tawhida Ben Cheikh born January 2, died December 6, 2010 at the age of 101. She was a Tunisia's oldest doctor and first doctor in the Arab world.
Born in Tunis on January 2, 1909, Tawhida Ben Cheikh was the first girl to pass the baccalaureate in Tunisia in 1928, and graduated from the faculty of medicine of Paris in 1936.
She specialized afterwards in gynecology and contributed to the launching of family planning in Tunisia through the department she founded at Charles Nicolle hospital in 1963, and then the Montfleury Clinic, first clinic set up by Tunisia’s Family planning association in 1970.
At the same time, she dedicated her life to militancy for Tunisia. She was in charge in 1937 of the First Tunisian women’s French-language magazine “Leila” published in Tunisia in 1936.
She was also a member of several associations and actually held the position of Vice President of Tunisia’s Red Crescent society.
Tawhida Ben Cheikh was the niece of the late Tahar Ben Ammar who led in 1956 the negotiations for Tunisia’s independence.
