Paulina Chiziane born June 4, 1955 , Manjacaze,southern province of Gaza, Mozambique) is an author of novels and short stories in the Portuguese language.
Paulina Chiziane is the first woman in Mozambique to have published a novel. She is an expert on the rich oral tradition in her country and uses local storytelling techniques in her writing.
She is an author of novels and short stories in the Portuguese language. She studied at Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo. Born to a protestant family, they moved from the province to the capital Maputo - previously Lourenço Marques -during the writer's early childhood. At home she spoke Chope and Ronga She was the first woman in Mozambique to publish a novel. Her writing generated some polemical discussions about the practice of polygamy in the country. For example, her first novel Balada do Amor ao Vento discusses polygamy in southern Mozambique during the colonial period. Actively involved in the politics of Frelimo - Liberation Front of Mozambique - her narrative often relate the social uneasiness of a country plagued by the colonial war and split by civil conflicts . Her novel "Niketche: Uma História de Poligamia" won the José Craveirinha Prize in 2003.
