Dr Teguest Guerma an Ethiopian national with an extensive career in public health has joined AMREF as Director General.
is the Associate Director of the WHO HIV/AIDS Department. Dr Guerma has been the department's Associate Director since July 2004 and previously acted as the representative of WHO's Regional Office for Africa to the United Nations in New York for three years.
A medical doctor and infectious diseases specialist, Dr Guerma worked in Burundi and Senegal prior to working at WHO. In her 17 years at WHO, she has occupied several positions at country, regional and headquarters levels including Country Representative in Botswana. She has contributed extensively to the development of health strategies and policies both through normative work that has been adopted by
African regional committees and support to implementation at country level. She has
also worked extensively in the South East Asian region.
A national of Ethiopia, Dr Guerma received her medical degree from the University of
Reims in France, a Diploma in Infectious diseases and Bacteriology/Virology from the
University of Dakar, Senegal, and a Certificate of Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins
Dr Guerma is fluent in English, French and Amharic. She is the author of numerous
publications and articles on HIV/AIDS and public health issues.
