Biography :

Frene Noshir Ginwala (b. April 25, 1932) is a retired South African  politician. A member of the African National Congress the ruling party in South Africa. Was the Speaker of the House in the South African parlament when the first democratic government with Nelson Mandela as president came in to power in 1994.
Ms. Ginwala headed the research department of the African National Congress (ANC) and its Commission for the Emancipation of Women. After leaving South Africa as a student to help arrange the escape of the late ANC President Oliver Tambo, she completed her studies at the universities of London and Oxford before returning to Africa to become managing editor of Tanzania's principal English-language newspaper. In 1990, she returned to South Africa to help establish the ANC Women's League. Ms. Ginwala has published several books on apartheid and on gender issues.
