Biography :

Jane Raphaely (b. July 30, 1937), is one of the most powerful woman in South Africa. Raphaely founded Fair Lady in 1967 and in 1982 launched Associated Magazines , now the largest privately owned publishing house in SA. With annual turnover of more than R200m, Associated Magazines controls the lion's share of the women's magazine title market, including Femina, House & Leisure, Brides & Homes, Baby & Me and marie claire. Raphaely also played an influential role in the publishing coup of the decade, securing the first publishing rights for Oprah Winfrey's magazine, O, outside the US.

Through her magazines, she influences more than 2m women readers monthly. But it's not all fashion and fads. Raphaely has campaigned and lobbied for various social causes , especially against abuse of women.

Jane Raphaely gained her B.Sc in Sociology and Economics at the London School of Economics, London University and did graduate studies at Columbia University NY on a Rotary Foundation Fellowship. She came to South Africa in 1960 and worked in advertising and PR before founding Fair Lady for Nasionale Pers in 1965. In 1984 she founded Jane Raphaely and Associates to publish Cosmopolitan in partnership with Nasionale Pers. In 1986 Associated Magazines was founded to publish Femina, House and Leisure, Baby and Me, Brides and Homes, and Marie Claire. Associated publishes 0: The Oprah Winfrey Magazine in South Africa in a joint venture with Hearst Magazines and Harpo. Cosmopolitan Kenya was launched in 2004.

Jane Raphaely  is the recipient of numerous awards for professional and humanitarian achievements. She has played a pivotal role in publishing for women in Southern Africa , not just in the scale and quality of the publications she is connected with, but in the way they have enriched the lives of readers.

Until now , Raphaely continues to expand her media empire.
