Biography :

Moncef Ghachem (b. July 29, 1946) , is a Tunisian poet.

Moncef Ghachem was born in 1946 in Madia, Tunisia, to a fishermen’s family; his outstanding studying career took him from Madia to Sousse, to Tunis and Paris. A journalist and writer, he went back to Tunisia in 1981 and now lives in Sidi Bou Said. He is the bard of the sea and of the ancient Mediterranean-Tunisian sea tradition. Regarded as one of the most intense poets of his generation, “with his truthful and transparent writing” (A. Mesbah), as “a poet of glittering and demanding words” (J. Dèjeux), Ghachem authored a rich poetry production from Georges d’enclos (Maison de la Culture, Tunis 1971), Cent mille oiseaux (Paris 1975), Car vivre est un Pays (Ed. Caractères, Paris 1978) to the more recent Cap Africa (L’Harmattan, Paris 1978), Orphie (Maison des Ecrivans Etrangers et traducteurs de Saint-Nazare, France 1996), Nouba (Our du Temps, Tunis 1997). He has also written L’Epervier , nouvelles da Madia (Paris 1994), mentioned at Découverte, which won him the Albert Camus prize. He has authored articles for several Tunisian and international dailies and magazines. He has also written essays and poems in anthologies, in 1991 he was awarded the Mirabilia International Prize for francophone poetry.
