Biography :

Tracey Rose (born in 1974), is a South African artist.

Tracey Rose was born in 1974 in Durban, South Africa and currently lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. She received her B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1996. She has taught at Vaal Triangle Technikon, Vanderbijl Park, South Africa and also at University of the Witwatersrand.
Tracey Rose’s work reflects on the cultural, economic and political differences that mark the world today, along with identity-related and ethnic issues. When  Rose graduated in the Fine Arts from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1996,her career as an artist started at that moment, with a series of exhibitions that included “Hitchhiker” at the Generator Art Space, Johannesburg (1996); the Johannesburg Biennial (1997); and “Cross/ings” at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (1997). At the latter she presented her video (Sin Título) (Untitled), in which she portrays herself shaving her own body hair with an electric razor, thus reflecting on identity and the vulnerability of the codes that usually define our cultural origins. In the video installation “TKO” (2000), produced during her residency at the Artpace Foundation for Contemporary Art de San Antonio (Texas,US), images of a boxer training with a punchbag are superimposed onto others from inside the bag. In this way, the spectator’s eye oscillates from one point of view to the other (aggressor-aggressed), in a clear allusion to the different roles and identities in play in contemporary society.
