Biography :

Akinbode Akinbiyi is a Nigerian photographer .

Born 1946 in Oxford, England; studies at the universities of Ibadan, Nigeria; Lancaster; and Heidelberg. In 1987 he receives the STERN Reportage Stipend; in 1993 he founds UMZANSI, a cultural center in Clermont Township in Durban, South Africa. In 2003 he curates the German contribution to the Vième Rencontres de la photographie africaine in Bamako, Mali. Akinbode Akinbiyi has worked since 1974 as a photographer, focusing on photojournalism and architectural and cultural photography; he engages with the phenomenon of megacities in Europe and, above all, in Africa, working presently on Cairo, Lagos, Kinshasa, and Johannesburg; he lives and works as photographer, curator, and author in Berlin.
