Biography :

Sotigui Kouyaté (born July 19,1936 - Died April 17, 2010) was  an  actor  from Mali & Burkina Faso. He is the descendant from a long line of Griots.according to the family tradition .He has become actor, dancer, musican and composer. He was also a professional footballer, playing until 1966.

He is the father of the producer Dani Kouyaté and the story teller Hassane Kassi Kouyaté.

In February 2009, he was named best actor at the Berlin Film Festival for the film "London River" by Franco Algerian producer Rachid Bouchareb.

"London River" was inspired by the terrorist attempt of 7 July 2005 in London. It tells the story of a man (played by Sotigui Kouyaté) and his wife (English actress Brenda Blethyn) who have come to try and find their son and daughter reported as disappeared. They find that their children have been living together.

Sotigui is an actor who works in both the theatre and cinema. He started out as a griot before becoming a professional football player, which he played until 1966 and was captain of the Burkina Faso national team.

In 1966 he agreed to take a role, acting, in the theatre at the request of his friend Boubacar Dicko. Sotigui's tall and fine form give him the allure of a wise man, someone who one seeks for advice and who has a thousand stories to tell. His cinema career started in 1968, where he played a role in "Protection des récoltes" (Jean David). Durin gthe 70's he continued to play little roles. He was discovered by the public in 1985 in "Mahabharata", realised by Peter Brook. The french cinema opened its doors to him with little roles in films such as " Black mic mac" (Thomas Gilou, 1985)," Y'a bon les Blancs" (Marco Ferreri, 1987) and "Un thé au Sahara"(Bernardo Bertolucci, 1989). In 1995, he played "Keita" ! l'héritage du griot", a full length film by his son Dani Kouyaté . In 2000, he played the leading role in " Little Sénégal (Rachid Bouchareb), the story of a person from Dakar who seeks out to find out about his American ancestres. 

 He died in Paris on April 2010 of pulmonary disease.
